Welcome to Chapters & Crumbs. Crumbs are often associated with the small, delightful remnants of something delicious, like all of my favorite things- cookies, cakes, and bread. I hope to keep sharing the little delightful crumbs of the internet, books, my brain, and life.
As a lover of books, I wanted to have a *little* space to talk about them. My own little corner dedicated to doing what I love doing— talking nonsense. Here it is. Stay a while.
Hello all.
I just finished Sunrise on the Reaping and as you can imagine, I’m not well. I am at a loss for words. Who knew I could feel all of the devastating emotions I felt as a ripe eighteen year old when The Hunger Games came out?
Phew. Bear with me.
John Green just published his newest book— about tuberculosis no less! This begs the question, have we gone back to the 2010s? All I need is a new MuteMath album. I remember vividly having gotten back into reading around this time and having the greatest reading year, ever. What a time to be alive and literate.
These were some of my faves. Have you read any of them? Mostly YA, but there are so many underrated gems!
I hate to leave you waiting for the book reviews, so let’s go!
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wong
“The question isn’t: How do I stop feeling this way? That’s stupid. I can’t. The question is: What can I do with this feeling?”
In the city of Tiran, Sciona has dedicated her life to the pursuit of magic, in hopes of becoming the first woman admitted to the High Magistry. However, when she becomes a highmage, it is not without a cost. She is paired with an assistant, Thomil, who is more than just a janitor. He was a hunter beyond Tiran’s magical barrier before the crossing that took his family. Together they uncover a secret that will cost them everything.
This book was tricky. It is all the things I love: dark academia, magic, fantasy. It just didn’t work for me. Perhaps I was not in the right mind for it. It is very sad and bleak, and I just didn’t connect with the characters. I enjoyed the overall story and themes, but I missed the emotional impact at the end. This seems to be a me problem, because the reviews are excellent!

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
“They will not use my tears for their entertainment.”
The story follows Haymitch Abernathy as he gears up for the fiftieth annual Hunger Games. Because it is the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be reaped and forced to play. This is a prequel book to The Hunger Games.
This book! This book was everything! I was left flabbergasted, enraged, and heartbroken. All of the things. I need to do a re-read/re-watch immediately. I am not the same. Haymitch is a beloved and misunderstood character, especially in the first book. I knew his back story would hurt, but man I was not ready for this masterpiece. The way the story was woven so beautifully, and knowing what we know in Catching Fire, just made the end more heartbreaking and horrifying. Suzanne is a master in plotting, and so many familiar names showed up on the page! I was excited and then left verklempt. If you love all things Hunger Games, you need to read this book! It’s actually a requirement.

Off to read some happy, happy books!!!
